Split STL in Fusion 360 (How To Edit Meshes)

Fusion 360 STL Mesh Edit

You're about to 3d print a file and it's too big. You want to split it in half. You want to cut some of it away. How do you do this quickly in fusion 360. Hey, Tyler, Beckwith tech and espresso. So you open up maybe a downloaded file from Thingiverse and you're in Cura. You're ready to print and you look at it and you realize there's just too much of this particular design. So in my case, I had something similar where I had a threaded end and I wanted to be able to chop some of that off. So how can you edit this quickly using something like fusion 360? Okay. So starting in fusion, 360, be sure to start with insert mesh, don't use the file upload for bringing in an STL. I find that file, bring it in, be sure to select the right units.

And now what I want to do is use a tool in the mesh tool. You'll notice your mesh workspace may not be here if it's not that's because you are using the timeline. Another kind of challenge with fusion. I wish this was a little more straightforward, but you have to turn off the capture or history, and now your mesh tool bar should be there. Great. So once this is available, we'll now use the plain cut tool and you can use an existing plain or geometry if you want to make one. So I could go make a construction plane. There's also a tool here that kind of allows you to build it on the fly. So I selected that kind of top face, and then I angled the plane and now I'm going to dry, you know, drag it down the distance that I want. So let's just say I'm only wanting, you know, roughly a quarter of this design in my 3d print. Now here's an important one. Is, are you using this plane to chop this remainder out? So it's giving you a preview of what you're keeping. If I hit leave it as it is, I can flip it. And it's telling me what I, what I get and what's removed. Do I want to just trim that away? And maybe this is the best way to do it. Let's

Say that is for now. I want to just remove that geometry. I don't want to 3d print

It, split it anything, but I also you'll notice this is kind of leaving a container. That's not water tight, this won't 3d print. Well, so I'm going to use the fill type and fill that back in hit. Okay. And now I've got this 3d print ready to go. I could right click on the body, save that to an STL and pass that along to Kira and my case. Okay, let's go back over what I kind of just skipped over here. I'm going to going to split this mesh using this plane, and instead of trimming it and cutting one side and removing it, I'd like to split it into two bodies. So maybe you want to just break this up so that you can print it as two objects in your 3d print. And I want to be sure to fill it back in with the uniform fill type and you can see now I have the top, the upper and bottom body, and they're complete files ready for Kira.
