Deleted a Fusion 360 File? Here's How to Get It Back
Sep 30, 2025Title: Deleted a Fusion 360 File? Here's How to Get It Back
QUICK SUMMARY:
You can't delete a file while it's open — close it first.
-
After deletion, it won’t show up in your data panel or search.
-
Go to View on Web > check the Trash in the correct project.
-
Restore the file from the web view — it’ll reappear in Fusion.
-
If it’s not in the trash, you might find a cached version locally on your machine.

We’ve all been there.
You delete a file in Fusion — maybe by accident, maybe you thought you didn’t need it anymore — and then five minutes later, welp, you need it.
So how do you get a deleted Fusion 360 design back?
Here’s the good news: It’s not gone forever. You’ve just gotta know where to look.
First: You Can’t Delete an Open File
Kinda weird, but worth noting.
If you try to delete a design that’s currently open, Fusion won’t let you. You’ll need to:
-
Close the design first
-
Then right-click it in the data panel
-
Choose Delete
It’ll ask for confirmation, and once you click delete — poof — the file’s gone from your panel.
Now What? It’s Not in the Data Panel
If you go looking for it right after? Nope. Won’t show up in search. No obvious trash folder either.
But here’s the trick:
Go to the Web Version of Your Fusion Team
You’ve got two ways to do this:
-
In the data panel, click Open on the Web
-
Or right-click any design and choose View Details on the Web
This opens up your Fusion Team site in a browser. Important: Make sure you're inside the right project — the one where you deleted the file.
Once you're in the right project, look for the Trash icon.
Boom. There’s your deleted design.
Restore It From the Trash
You’ll have a couple options:
-
Delete Permanently (don’t do that unless you’re really sure)
-
Restore
Click Restore, give it a second, and then head back to Fusion. You might need to refresh your data panel — but your design should be back.
Still Can’t Find It?
Alright, worst case. Let’s say it’s not in the trash.
Autodesk says there’s still a chance — you might be able to find it in your locally cached data.
The location depends on your OS:
-
Windows:
C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\
(look for something likeW.login
) -
Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Autodesk Fusion 360/
You’re basically looking for a cached version that didn’t get synced or deleted yet. If you can find the right file, you can re-upload it into Fusion manually.
Not ideal, but hey — better than starting from scratch.
Wrap Up
Losing a file sucks. But at least Fusion gives us a few lifelines.
-
Check the web trash can first
-
Make sure you’re in the right project
-
And if it’s really gone, dig into your local cache
Hope this saves you some panic. And if you’ve got a tip or recovery method that’s helped you out — drop it in the comments. Let’s help each other not lose our minds. 😅
See you in the next one.
